He was a grocer’s apprentice and worked at 10 High St., Northfleet for Charles Pearson.
He appeared on the 1891 census living with his mother in Avenue Road, Kearnsey, aged 25 and working as a grocer.

In 1871 he was living in 188 Lower Street, Deal, Kent with his second wife, Emma, 4 children from his first marriage and 3 from his second marriage. He was 57 years old and a Hairdresser.
In 1881 he was living at 196a High Street, Deal, Kent with his second wife Emma, a daughter, son and granddaughter Mabel Harding aged 9 from Islington, London. He was 66 years old and a Hairdresser (employing 1 man). Also living there was Harry Harding aged 22, unmarried and a Hairdresser's Assistant from Leicester, and Sarah Noble, aged 15, a Servant from Deal.
After marriage John moved to 187 Lower Street, where he lived and worked. In the 1850s the address was 10 Lower St. but this could be the same house just renumbered. Later Lower Street changed its name to High Street.
In his Will made in 1889 John left £5.5s. to Emma, £3.3s. to Caroline and £2.2s. to each of his five daughters - Harriet, Esther, Edith, Alice and Cecilia. He also remembered his granddaughter, Mabel Annie Harding leaving her the same money as most of his daughters. The main estate went to Emma. Its gross value was £336.3.2. and net value £142.14.3.

Gilbert was a Post Boy, working from The Ship Inn, Faversham from the birth of his son John in 1815 till somewhere between 1825 and 1828, when he became an ostler.
Gilbert and Ann ran the White Horse Pub in West Street, Faversham from 1832-34 according to Piggotts National and Commercial Directory but they could have been in residence there for longer than that.
Gilbert became the landlord of the Golden Lion Pub in the High Street at Gillingham, Kent in 1838 till his retirement sometime after 1851.
On the 1851 census Gilbert William was a licensed victualler aged 59, his wife Sarah was 57 years old. They were living at 54 High St. Gillingham, with them was Dinah Wood, Gilbert’s step daughter.

It is possible that John received between 2 shillings and 6 pence and 5 shillings from the parish for some years between 1780 and 1794.
